Buying property in Marbella
Marbella is the best-known destination on the Costa del Sol: a year-round city of around 150,000 people with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, a beautifully preserved old town, around 27 kilometres of coastline and the protection of the Sierra Blanca mountains behind it. Málaga airport, with direct flights to most European cities, is around 45 minutes away by car.
Property for sale in Marbella: the main areas
Each part of Marbella has its own character. The Golden Mile is the prestigious stretch between the town and Puerto Banús. Nueva Andalucía is the Golf Valley behind Puerto Banús. Marbella East offers quieter beaches and greener surroundings, while San Pedro de Alcántara and Guadalmina have a more local, family feel. Just inland, Benahavís is home to some of Spain's most exclusive gated estates.
Property types in Marbella
The market ranges from apartments in the old town and on the seafront to penthouses with panoramic sea views, family townhouses in gated communities and some of the most impressive luxury villas in Europe. New developments continue to raise standards for design and energy efficiency, while well-located resale homes remain in strong demand.
What to know before you buy
- Budget for purchase costs of roughly 10 to 13 percent on top of the price for a resale home, covering transfer tax, notary, land registry and legal fees.
- Use an independent lawyer to check the title, licences and any debts on the property before you sign.
- Non-residents can buy freely in Spain, and mortgages are available to foreign buyers.
